The word "sudoku" is actually an abbreviation of the phrase suji wa dokushin ni kagiru - or "Only single numbers allowed" - which was the title of the puzzle when it appeared in a Japanese puzzle magazine in 1984. ("Su" means "number" and "doku" means "single".)
It's very simple, you are presented with a 9x9 table which is made up of nine 3x3 blocks.
The objective is to place numbers into the table so that each row, column and block contain the numbers 1 to 9 only once. To get you started, some numbers are already scattered across the table.
It's very fun, challenging and addictive.
